On February 23, 1933, Eugene Melvin Thomas was born to John Thomas and Anna Lee Tate Thomas in Danville, IL. Eugene was the youngest of nine siblings and was the last living sibling of the Thomas family. Eugene graduated from Danville High School. Eugene enlisted into the U.S. Army as a English Instructor in the Alien Enlistee Program in Frankfurt, Germany. After completing his service, he became a High School teacher at Chicago Public Schools. He then worked as a Caseworker/Consultant for Cook Country Dept. of Public Aid. Eugene worked in outpatient psychiatry at Evanston Hospital, as a Social Worker in Evanston School District 65, as a counselor at Family Counseling Services of Evanston & Skokie Valley, and at Metropolitan Family Services. He was also an Administrator and Field Coordinator at Loyola University Chicago Graduate School of Social Work for the Post Masters Type 73 Program. Eugene was appointed to the Board of Directors-Kmetko Assoc. LTD Social Welfare Agency and was an Elected Illinois Council Representative for the National Assoc. of Rail Passengers NARP (Amtrak). Eugene has earned many certifications: LCSW, DCSW, ACSW, CICC, and CCCJS. He was awarded many honors in the field of education and social work. Eugene always excelled in his academic studies and earned the title of Dr. Eugene M. Thomas after successfully earning his doctorate. Dr. Eugene M. Thomas was an educated man, who loved to travel the world, was an avid art collector, enjoyed traveling by train, and delighted in taking pictures at family gathering, throughout his travels, and outings with friends. He was a great man and will dearly be missed by all.
Eugene was proceeded in death by his parents John Thomas and Annie Lee Tate Thomas, his brothers, Robert Thomas, Clarence Thomas, Rudolph Thomas and his sisters, Esther McClain, Carletta Moore, Freda Smith, Juanita Stringfellow.
Eugene leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted husband of 51 years Rev. Gordon McCoy, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
