Born in Grand Junction, Colorado, Jane was part of the Salvation Army from birth until about 1959. She found her way home to MCC Los Angeles in 1972 after having been involved with the Sky Plot Radio Church 1959-1965 and People’s Tabernacle of Faith (LA) 1965-1970. Coming home to MCC meant a lifetime of ministry and deep relationships with so many.

In those early years, Jane served as an Exhorter and Deacon at MCC LA, attended MCC Cincinnati, and was founding Worship Coordinator for MCC Columbus, Ohio. She attended MCC’s Samaritan College and the Union for Experimental Colleges and Universities. Like other clergy in those days, Jane was first Licensed in 1979 and later Ordained in 1987.

She pastored MCC of Pomona Valley, California (1979-1987). Jane and her spouse, Rev. Susan Deitrick co-pastored MCC Ocean of Life, Costa Mesa, California (1987-1994). The 90’s also included serving as Interim Clergy On-Staff at MCC Christ Chapel, Santa Ana, California and as Assistant Southwest District Coordinator, USA.

Jane supposedly retired however kept on serving in Victory Arrow MCC, Springfield, Missouri; Good Shepherd Parish MCC, Toledo, Ohio; New Creation MCC, Columbus, Ohio; MCC Cincinnati, Ohio; and led the GLAD District Judiciary Office. She finally retired her active clergy license in 2016.

“Jane could always be counted on to be calm and confrontational with a quiet voice and a smile,” said Rev. Brenda Hunt. Recalling a time in the early 80’s, Hunt tells us “as things were ramping up for the MCCLA choir regarding more including language, it looked as though rehearsal was going to end in a shouting match if not a blood bath. Director Jimmy Irving said we would sing through the anthem and go home. As we ended a three-fold Amen and as voices went silent, there came the strong rich alto of Jane Carl singing ‘ahhh-woman!’ There was a gasping silence before the entire choir burst out laughing and everyone peacefully went on their way home.”

Rev. Elder Troy D. Perry, founder of MCC, also recalls Jane’s voice. “She had one of the most beautiful alto voices in our gospel choir…Jane was one of those MCC Saints who deeply loved the Lord! When I heard that Jane had died, I thought of what the Psalmist David said, ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of God’s saints.’ Rest, sister, I look forward to seeing you again.” Troy also said “I always loved being with Susan Deitrick her partner and her any time we could get together. She could tell the greatest jokes and had such a great smile and laughter that would set your soul on fire.”
